6 Summer Tips for Your Trees

Taking care of your trees during the summer heat ensures a vibrant and healthy landscape. Here are 6 summer tips for your trees that you shouldn’t miss out on:

  1.  Mulching: It’s not too late to mulch. Mulching reduces weed competition, stabilizes soil temperatures, and conserves moisture. Use three to four inches of shredded hardwood mulch. Form a donut shape around the tree base and avoid piling mulch against the trunk to prevent disease and insect problems.   2.  Irrigation: Young or newly planted trees need extra water during hot, dry summer months. Aim for an inch of water per week. Watering deeply and less frequently promotes better root growth compared to shallow, frequent watering.

  4.  Pruning: While most pruning should be done during the dormant season, summer pruning is necessary for diseased, dead, or damaged branches, and for trees that flower in spring, like magnolias and lilacs, which should be pruned after they finish blooming.
