Reducing the height and spread of your trees without the damage of “topping.”
Is your tree growing out of control? Sometimes a tree simply gets too big for its space. It might be blocking sunlight to your garden, interfering with utility lines, or acting as a massive “sail” that catches dangerous amounts of wind during Chattanooga storms.
Many homeowners think the solution is “topping”—chopping the top half off. This is wrong. Topping creates weak, spindly regrowth that is prone to breaking. At Lumberjacks, we use Crown Canopy Reduction. We selectively trim live limbs to reduce height and spread while maintaining the tree’s natural shape and structural integrity. This strengthens the tree against wind and ice while stimulating healthy new growth.
We assess the tree’s architecture to identify which branches are overextended or causing imbalance. We map out a plan to reduce size without shocking the tree’s system.
Instead of indiscriminate chopping, we cut limbs back to a lateral branch that is large enough to assume the role of the new leader. This technique (often called “drop-crotching”) preserves the tree’s natural nutrient flow.
By reducing the overall canopy mass, we significantly lower the “wind sail” effect. This makes the tree much less likely to fail during severe weather events.
