6 Summer Tips for Your Trees

Taking care of your trees during the summer heat ensures a vibrant and healthy landscape. Here are 6 summer tips for your trees that you shouldn’t miss out on:

  1.  Mulching: It’s not too late to mulch. Mulching reduces weed competition, stabilizes soil temperatures, and conserves moisture. Use three to four inches of shredded hardwood mulch. Form a donut shape around the tree base and avoid piling mulch against the trunk to prevent disease and insect problems. 2.  Irrigation: Young or newly planted trees need extra water during hot, dry summer months. Aim for an inch of water per week. Watering deeply and less frequently promotes better root growth compared to shallow, frequent watering.
  3.  Fertilization: Ensure your trees have the nutrients they need for healthy leaf and shoot growth, and to fend off pests and diseases. Trees in urban or suburban areas often require more fertilization than those in natural settings.
  4.  Pruning: While most pruning should be done during the dormant season, summer pruning is necessary for diseased, dead, or damaged branches, and for trees that flower in spring, like magnolias and lilacs, which should be pruned after they finish blooming. Large trees should be pruned by professionals.
  5.  Pest Inspections: Regularly check for pests throughout the summer. Early detection is key to managing pests such as magnolia scale, bagworms, Japanese beetles, aphids, and spider mites.
  6.  Storm Damage Prevention: Summer storms can cause significant damage. Cabling, bracing, or removing weak limbs can help protect your property from falling branches.
